imo’s official FAQs describe advance chat backup, a three-month expiry for unsaved photos and videos, and separate checks for missing diamonds—not a paid recovery service. Back up before changing phones or deleting chats, keep payment receipts, and treat processing times as checkpoints rather than guarantees. Sources: imo’s backup FAQ (2019-01-21) and payment FAQ (2020-09-16).
Fact-check date: 2026-11-07, UTC+8. This guide follows the official FAQ backup flow that requires Google services and a Google account. It separates what the FAQs actually say from our practical recommendations. Those publication dates matter: these are older official instructions checked again today, not newly announced 2026 recovery rules.
Start by separating backup, media expiry and payment trouble
If you are moving to a new phone and an imo purchase is also pending, it is tempting to treat everything as one account problem. Don’t. The official instructions address different situations, with different evidence and different next steps. A payment receipt belongs in a diamond dispute; it does not establish that a missing conversation was backed up.
That distinction is the useful starting point from the 2019-01-21 backup FAQ and 2020-09-16 payment FAQ, both rechecked on 2026-11-07. Neither page promises that buying diamonds restores deleted messages. We therefore do not recommend a recharge as a recovery step.
| Your situation | What the official instructions address | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| You still have the chats and are changing devices | Enable Chat Backup beforehand; check Google services, account access and storage | That signing in later replaces advance preparation |
| A photo or video is important | Unsaved photos and videos expire after three months | That three months is a deleted-chat recovery window |
| Chats disappeared after a timer | Either participant enabling disappearing messages can trigger scheduled removal | That a payment cancels that timer |
| Money was deducted but diamonds are missing | Check payment status and use the relevant receipt or refund route | That the processing period guarantees a completed dispute |
Table sources: official backup FAQ, 2019-01-21; official payment FAQ, 2020-09-16; checked 2026-11-07. The “do not assume” column is our reading boundary, not an additional platform promise.
The official backup flow starts before the risky change
The backup FAQ dated 2019-01-21 says: “Before you change device or delete your chat, we suggest you back up your chat and media.” Its menu path is Me → Setting → Chats → Chat Backup. That is direct evidence that the described flow includes a Chat Backup option.
Be careful with the wording here. The sentence talks about changing devices or deleting a chat. A separate note warns about uninstalling the app. Read them together as a reason to prepare before either kind of destructive change, not as permission to experiment with uninstalling first and sort out backup later.
- Open Me, then Setting, then Chats. Follow the path in the official FAQ rather than a payment or membership screen.
- Turn on Chat Backup. The FAQ specifically names this control; do not replace it with an assumption about general account syncing.
- Check Google services and your Google account. These are explicit conditions in this published flow.
- Check space in both places. The FAQ requires sufficient storage on the device and in the Google account.
- Use the question-mark help inside Chat Backup for further details. The official page points readers there rather than giving one universal storage allowance.
Steps based on the official backup FAQ, 2019-01-21, checked 2026-11-07. Before changing phones, our recommendation is to review the backup status and the media choices visible on your own screen. An enabled setting alone is not evidence we have personally verified your backup.
The useful mindset is simple: check what exists before changing what exists. Keep the old phone available while you review the flow. That is a precaution we recommend, not a promise that keeping the phone makes every deleted item recoverable. The official FAQ does not give a universal recovery success rate.
Updating and reinstalling are different actions
The same 2019-01-21 FAQ states: “Update version directly won't lose chats, but uninstall imo and install will remove chats.” If someone suggests a clean reinstall as a casual first fix, that warning deserves your attention before you proceed.
Do not stretch it into a different claim, either. The note describes the consequence of removing and reinstalling the app; it does not say that no backed-up data can ever be restored. Advance backup and local chat removal can both be relevant. The sensible order is to check backup first, rather than using reinstalling as your backup test.
Watch the backup controls without treating an old recording as today’s interface
[VIDEO] How to Backup Imo Chats | Imo Messages Backup, Original itech, published 2025-05-10. The title and channel were verified through YouTube oEmbed, and the publication date through the video page, on 2026-11-07. This is an independent tutorial, not an official imo announcement or a current-version test.
The recording is useful because it makes the separate choices visible: entering Chat Backup, choosing what media to include, and responding to a restore prompt. It should help you recognize the kind of controls to examine. It should not persuade you to assume that every account has the same screen, defaults or backup contents.

Tutorial excerpt, 0:40–0:56, Original itech, 2025-05-10. Personal profile and account details have been masked. This illustrates the recorded menu path; the official FAQ dated 2019-01-21 supplies the written path.

Tutorial excerpt, 1:28–1:36, Original itech, 2025-05-10. Include Videos is off in the recording before the demonstrator changes it. That is an observed setting on this recording, not a claim about everyone’s default. Account details have been masked.
For your own move, our recommendation is to examine both media controls instead of treating “chat backup” as shorthand for “every file is included.” The video shows separate Include Images and Include Videos options. The FAQ independently tells you to back up chats and media, but does not list these particular toggle defaults.

Tutorial excerpt, 2:44–2:56, Original itech, 2025-05-10; narrowed to avoid the earlier phone-entry and notification screens. The recorded prompt says: “If you don't restore now, you won't be able to restore later.” Account details are masked.
Read that warning as evidence of what this historical recording displays. We recommend reading any Restore or Skip warning on your own device before choosing. We do not generalize the recording into a permanent rule for every release, and it does not prove a paid “restore later” option.
Three months applies to unsaved media, not every conversation
The exact sentence in the backup FAQ, 2019-01-21, is: “Unsaved photos and videos will be expired after 3 months.” The subject is unsaved photos and videos. It is not all messages, all backups, or all account information.
This is where an otherwise helpful recovery guide can go off track. Changing “unsaved photos and videos” into “you have three months to restore deleted chats” adds a promise the sentence does not contain. Likewise, replacing three months with a universal 90-day recovery entitlement changes both the object and the meaning.
Our practical advice is to identify important media while you can still access it and save what you need before relying on future availability. This is a precaution based on the published expiry warning, not a guarantee about how long any particular item will remain accessible on your account.
| Published term | Safe interpretation | Unsafe rewrite |
|---|---|---|
| Unsaved photos and videos | The expiry note refers to this media category | Every conversation disappears on the same schedule |
| Three months | A published media-expiry period | A guaranteed recovery period for deleted messages |
| Chat Backup | A named advance-backup setting in the FAQ | An automatic paid rescue after any deletion |
| Disappearing messages | Scheduled removal when either side enables the feature | A payment problem that recharging will reverse |
Source: official backup FAQ, 2019-01-21, checked 2026-11-07. Interpretations distinguish the page’s actual wording from claims it does not establish.
Check disappearing messages before diagnosing a backup failure
The same FAQ, 2019-01-21, asks whether you or the other participant enabled disappearing messages. It says chat records are automatically removed after the scheduled time if either side turns the feature on, and that a notice can be seen in the chat box.
So, when reporting missing chats, distinguish a timed deletion from a device change or accidental deletion. Those are separate questions in the official support checklist. We are not claiming that every disappearance comes from a timer. We are saying that the official troubleshooting flow explicitly asks you to check it.
Paid recovery, account exports and backups are not interchangeable
A claim that imo has no Chat Backup option conflicts with the named control in the official FAQ dated 2019-01-21. That does not establish universal availability, but it is enough to reject a blanket “no backup option” description of the documented flow.
The official backup instructions describe advance preparation and troubleshooting. The payment FAQ describes diamond orders. Neither of these pages establishes a link between buying diamonds and bringing back deleted conversations. That is the narrow, supportable correction to a paid-recovery promise.
Similarly, do not treat a label such as “Request Account Info” as proof of deleted-chat restoration. An account-information request and a chat restore are different claims that need their own evidence. The 2019-01-21 backup FAQ tells readers to enable Chat Backup; it does not identify an account export as a substitute for that preparation.
There is no need to swing to the opposite extreme and declare every deleted chat permanently unrecoverable. The official page asks for details about missing history, which is a reason to describe your case accurately. It is not a published guarantee of recovery, but neither is it a basis for a blanket verdict about every possible case.
Before paying for anything advertised as recovery, our editorial checklist is to ask: which official instruction describes this exact capability, what prior backup does it require, and which data does it claim to restore? If the explanation jumps straight from buying diamonds to recovering messages, these two official FAQs do not substantiate that jump.
Build a useful missing-chat report
The official FAQ dated 2019-01-21 asks for the date the history was lost, the contact’s username, whether you deleted the chat by mistake, whether you changed devices, and whether either person enabled disappearing messages. Those details are more useful to the stated troubleshooting flow than a recharge amount.
- Describe the missing item: a conversation, an unsaved photo, a video, or more than one category.
- Record the loss date and contact username: these are specifically requested by the FAQ.
- Explain the sequence: a device change, deletion, direct update or uninstall followed by reinstall.
- Check the timer question: mention any disappearing-message notice relevant to the conversation.
- Follow the log instruction where applicable: the FAQ says to turn on Upload log before feedback, except on imo Lite.
Checklist combines the official questions and log instruction, 2019-01-21, with our recommendation to distinguish the missing data category. Checked 2026-11-07.
Keep the report factual. “I changed phones, then this conversation was missing” gives a sequence. “My diamonds should unlock recovery” assumes a feature these sources do not describe. You do not need to diagnose the technical cause yourself; you do need to avoid mixing a missing-chat case with a separate order dispute.
Missing diamonds: follow the receipt, not a recovery promise
The payment FAQ dated 2020-09-16 says: “Payments may take up to 3 working days to process.” It also says a complete order changes from “recharging” to “recharged” and asks users to ensure payment succeeded and avoid duplicate orders.
That gives you a status check and a processing period. It does not give you a guaranteed dispute-resolution deadline. In particular, the page does not state a guaranteed five-to-seven-day solution. Do not turn an older official processing note into a new promise about how quickly support or a refund will finish.
For a Google-paid order, keep the receipt and compare it with the affected wallet order. The FAQ says the GPA order number can be obtained from the Google purchase confirmation email or payment activity. Its published menu path for the problem order is Me → diamond icon → imo wallet.
- Confirm the payment and status. The FAQ distinguishes a successful payment from an unsuccessful recharge order.
- Avoid placing a duplicate order to fix uncertainty. This follows the page’s explicit warning.
- Use three working days as the stated processing checkpoint. Do not silently convert working days into a fixed calendar-day countdown.
- After that threshold, assemble the requested evidence. The official instructions list the information needed for confirmation.
- If it remains unresolved, follow the refund route for the payment method. The FAQ points Google-payment cases toward Google and other payment methods toward their own customer service.
Source for payment steps: official payment FAQ, 2020-09-16, checked 2026-11-07. These instructions concern payment trouble, not restoration of messages or expired media.
The evidence checklist for an overdue Google-paid order
| Evidence | What to include |
|---|---|
| Payment method and timing | The payment method, date and time requested by the FAQ |
| Payment record | A screenshot of the detailed successful payment record |
| Google reference | The GPA order number from the receipt or Google payment activity |
| Recharge account | The phone number used for the recharge, including country code |
| Affected wallet entry | The problem order number, separate from the Google receipt reference |
Source: official payment FAQ, 2020-09-16. The page requests this information for orders over three working days; checked 2026-11-07.
The important distinction is between the Google purchase reference and the problem order number inside imo. The FAQ asks for both. Our recommendation is to keep those labels separate in your notes so you can provide the requested fields without substituting one reference for the other.
iOS payment checks use a different route
For iOS payments, the 2020-09-16 FAQ says to review the status one to two days later. It states that imo cannot further check the order because of iOS privacy, and directs unresolved refund requests to the App Store or Apple customer service.
Keep this as a payment distinction. One to two days is the stated interval for checking status again, not a refund-completion guarantee. Do not combine that instruction with the Google receipt workflow and advertise a single universal deadline for every payment channel.
The three official timelines, with their meanings attached

Original graphic by Buffget, 2026-11-07, UTC+8. Sources: imo payment FAQ, 2020-09-16, and backup FAQ, 2019-01-21. The cards are separate rules, not a common-scale time chart.
Keep the labels attached whenever you share these numbers. “Three months” without “unsaved photos and videos” sounds like a recovery policy. “Three working days” without “payment processing” sounds like a support guarantee. The official wording supports neither shortcut. This is why the chart deliberately does not put all three numbers on one countdown.
Diamond prices are purchase information, not recovery evidence
If you separately want diamonds, compare the actual packs rather than using a recovery claim to justify a purchase. The Buffget IMO Diamonds product page, checked on 2026-11-07, displayed 100, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000-diamond options. The table below uses the displayed selling prices, not discount badges or crossed-out prices.
| Buffget pack | Displayed USD price | Calculated diamonds per USD |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | $2.12 | 47.17 |
| 500 | $10.30 | 48.54 |
| 1,000 | $20.61 | 48.52 |
| 2,000 | $41.21 | 48.53 |
| 5,000 | $103.02 | 48.53 |
Product-page snapshot: 2026-11-07, UTC+8. Calculation: diamonds ÷ displayed USD price, rounded to two decimals. About 48.5 diamonds per dollar describes the larger packs in this snapshot, not the 100-diamond pack.
For an official-price reference, the Saudi Arabia and India App Store pages show different pack quantities and local currencies. The sampled official tiers are 42, 210, 420, 2,100 and, on the Saudi page, 8,400. None exactly matches a Buffget pack quantity above, so these are side-by-side observations rather than a same-pack discount comparison.
| Official App Store region | Displayed quantity | Local price | Calculated diamonds per USD equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia | 42 | SAR 4.99 | 31.56 |
| Saudi Arabia | 210 | SAR 19.99 | 39.39 |
| Saudi Arabia | 420 | SAR 39.99 | 39.38 |
| Saudi Arabia | 2,100 | SAR 199.99 | 39.38 |
| Saudi Arabia | 8,400 | SAR 899.99 | 35.00 |
| India | 42 | INR 99 | 39.94 |
| India | 210 | INR 499 | 39.62 |
| India | 420 | INR 999 | 39.58 |
| India | 2,100 | INR 4,999 | 39.55 |
Official price sources: Saudi Arabia App Store and India App Store, checked 2026-11-07. FX source: ExchangeRate-API USD feed, dated 2026-11-07 at 08:02 UTC+8; USD 1 = SAR 3.75 or INR 94.139177. Formula: diamonds × local-currency units per USD ÷ local price.
In this sampled regional snapshot, the official results span about 31.6–39.9 diamonds per USD equivalent, alongside roughly 48.5 for Buffget’s larger packs. These are our calculations using a dated exchange-rate feed, not official USD prices. They are not a worldwide App Store range or a promise about your final checkout.
We do not calculate a “cheaper by” percentage from mismatched pack sizes and regions. More importantly, neither price table establishes a chat-recovery benefit. A purchase decision and a missing-history investigation should stay separate even when you are dealing with both on the same day.
The November update does not establish a backup change
The US Google Play listing, checked 2026-11-07, shows an update date of 2026-11-04 and version 2026.09.1051 in its page data. Its release notes describe switching between audio and video during group calls without hanging up and redialing, plus deleting blocked call records.
Those are call-related changes, not evidence of new backup or paid-recovery abilities. The Saudi Arabia App Store version history lists 2026.10.4 on 2026-11-05, with “Bug fixes and performance improvements.” We do not infer a backup policy change from that general maintenance note.
Quick answers before you change phones or spend money
Does imo have a Chat Backup option?
Yes: the official backup FAQ dated 2019-01-21 explicitly names Chat Backup under Me → Setting → Chats. This guide addresses that FAQ’s flow requiring Google services, a Google account and sufficient space. The source is not a guarantee that every installation presents identical controls.
Does three months mean deleted messages can always be restored?
No. The 2019-01-21 FAQ attaches three months to the expiry of unsaved photos and videos. It does not describe a universal deleted-message recovery entitlement. Keep the data category attached to the number.
Will buying diamonds restore missing chats?
The backup FAQ, 2019-01-21, and payment FAQ, 2020-09-16, do not substantiate that promise. Follow the backup and missing-history questions for chat trouble; follow receipts and order status for diamond trouble. Do not recharge on the strength of a recovery claim these sources do not support.
Are missing diamonds guaranteed to be fixed within three working days?
No. The payment FAQ dated 2020-09-16 describes up to three working days for processing and requests evidence for orders beyond that point. Its separate iOS instruction says to check status one to two days later. Neither statement guarantees the completion time of a dispute or refund.
What should I do first if both chats and diamonds are missing?
Our recommendation is to open two separate evidence trails. For chats, use the date, contact, device-change and disappearing-message questions in the 2019-01-21 FAQ. For diamonds, use the receipt, payment method and problem order details in the 2020-09-16 FAQ. Preparation beats paying for a promise the official instructions do not make.
